Online redefinition
... it's a mechanism to make big table structure modifications without significantly affecting the availability of the table.
When a table is redefined online, it is accessible to both queries and DML during much of the redefinition process. The table is locked in the exclusive mode only during a very small window at the end of process and that is completely transparent to users.
Edition-based redefinition
... enables you to upgrade the database component of an application while it is in use, thereby minimizing or eliminating down time.
EBR allows to store two or more copies of you application in one, working, database. One copy is main, and all production users work with this main copy. Second copy may be used for testing or development. Developers or DBA need to perform additional steps to switch to second copy (obviously, if they have sufficient rights). Then, when modified second copy with next version of your application is ready for production, you can switch all users to new copy with new version transparently, without downtime, using two simple command
